As a locksmith, we’ve been called to plenty of burglar site (owner have to change lock after a thief force-in the lock). I think we’re qualified to give comment on this.
There are different perspective to talk about this. Lets say you’re a person who always forget to lock the main door. In this case, absolutely a smart door lock provides better security as it will automatically locks for you.
So there are many ways to look at this. First we take a look at the strength of locking.
How Strong is a Smart Door Lock?
Compared to the ordinary lock using keys (we call it mechanical lock)
If a thief tries to break in by kicking your main door, which lock will fail first? Will digital door lock last longer?
Answer is……they are the same…..
This aspect actually depends on the locking bolt. Essentially, digital door lock is using the same locking bolt with mechanical lock.
Digital door lock is actually a mechanical lock, added on with electronic parts and gear to control the locking bolt. So digital deadbolt is still a deadbolt lock. Digital mortise lock is still a mortise lock.
In terms of strength, SAME!
But….
When we look at the overall picture, one thing is for sure.
Digital door lock actually do provide more security compared to mechanical lock.
- You can monitor the lock from anywhere in the world. If it gets forced-in, you will get notification using smartphone technology. Then you can alert some friend or neighbor to help you out.
- You will never have unlocked door. Digital door lock will automatically lock the door once the door is closed
- Some digital lock comes with build in alarm. It can detect forced entry and the alarm will sound. It’s not as loud as electrical alarm, but if you’re a thief trying to break in as silent as possible and don’t want anyone to notice, you will be highly afraid to continue breaking in to the house. Thief wants absolute silence and stealth. Else they will jsut leave.
In conclusion:
Safeguarding Your Home with a Digital Lock
Digital locks are a wonderful new advancement. They provide a level of security that never existed before. To make sure that they last, it is important to install them the right way, and always use a good quality lock.
Some homeowners are hesitant to buy and install smart door locks because they worry about burglars getting in. But burglars and other intruders are unlikely to be able to break into your home if you have a good quality smart door lock, as it’s hard to bypass them.
Digital locks are not perfect and they still need some improvements, such as better instructions for installation and more precise monitoring software. And it surely will replace the ordinary lock in near future, just like how iPhone replaced Nokia.
