Using Card to “Slot-Open” a Door Lock is actually a Myth. Locksmith’s Insider Secret

    By Fine Lock Shop

When you accidentally locked the door, and left the key still inside, what is the 1st t hing that you will think of?

Try use a card to ‘slot’ open the lock. Actually everyone that i met, up to now, have all thought that the knob type of door lock can be just card-slot to open the door. And this is actually ‘fake news’.

Knob lock or cylindrical lock, are designed to be not slot-able. Whenever you seen or heard people manage to use card to slot open a lock, is actually due to: IMPROPER INSTALLATION. When the lock is not properly installed, it will expose a weakness which is slot-able.

Let me teach you now how to properly install a knob lock.

First you need to understand that cylindrical latch, has 2 parts: The Latch itself, and a Deadlatch.

This must be the first time you have heard of deadlatch. Maybe this is the first time you notice it. But it’s extremely important. If the deadlatch is pressed when the door is closed, the latch will be ‘deadened’. Hence the word DEAD-latch. So in a proper installation, the deadlatch is always pressed and can’t go into the door-frame hole.

When you (or someone else) do the installation, you need a hole at the door frame, for the latch to go in:

When you are measuring this hole and aligning this hole, the deadlatch CANNOT go into this hole, as shown below:

Another photo below here to show you the 99% of installation that we saw (the wrong way)

The main culprit is at the door frame hole (strike hole). just make sure that the deadlatch won’t go into hole. And this will guarantee your installation to be of higher security, and no one can just swipe a card to go into your house/ room.

    Lets Keep Our Families Safe.

  • Why Some Locks Are So Cheap?

Why Some Locks Are So Cheap?

You cannot be thinking that an RM500 lock, and an RM1000 locks to be of the same quality right? I have to call that thinking as stupid. This is simply not logic (unless you’re scammed)

There has to be some compromise, some cut-corners, something is lacking. From our experience, in the industry of smart door lock, the compromises are….

    No 1.
This is the most often, 95% is using this method to cut cost: Using cheaper Material (Use plastic instead of steel body). This makes the lock to be very not durable, very not safe and not secure. Cepat rosak. Few client that called us for “lock-out” case is this. Cheap lock, plastic components simply fail

    No.2
Cheaper motherboard and processor. All smart door locks need a microprocessor inside. Different microprocessors have different speed, accuracy, capabilities and quality. Not sure if you heard, but 3-5 years ago, it’s discovered that almost all unbranded smart lock (it’s a smart lock, but there is no brand on the lock) can be opened using a Tesla Coil (a black electrical interference devices). This is a bypassing method. Whereas branded and higher priced locks can’t be opened using the same coil.

    No.3
The unlocking system. Although from user perspective all smart lock looks the same during unlocking, there are actually different internal mechanism. Established brand usually uses electronic unlock (this is the safer way), while cheaper lock uses latches unlocking (this can be bypassed a lot easier). Latch unlocking is so much simpler, so much cheaper, and so much easier-to-bypass as well.

Whether to buy a cheap lock or expensive lock, we have no say as we don’t know the purpose. If you simply want to lock a room that is extremely seldom used and nothing important inside, then perhaps you don’t need to spend so much (just get a cheap one lah!). But if it’s an important door, we highly recommend something more established.

  • 5 Ultimate Ways To “Tell” a Smart Lock Is Good

This is the most important guide that we can simplify to help everyone make a good decision on how to choose a good door lock (especially smart lock).

    1. Weight:

    – Lightweight = cheaper and more fragile material. Short-lived lock.

    – Tensile strength is the most important aspect in choosing lock material. From worst to best is: Aluminium Alloy, Zinc Alloy, Brass, Stainless Steel.

    – So can you guess correctly which is the lightest to the heaviest?

    2. Brand:

    – Branded = long reputable company. Example Samsung, Kaadas, Philips, etc. Their spare part is the easiest to find and available. Quality and security are also assured.

    – No brand (or some brand that you never heard of, not even got a company website), we’ve tried many. When problem comes, no spare part available. No matter how sweet is the promise made during purchase

    3. Time in market:

    – The time of the company in the market also important. Experienced company (ehem ehem, like us,) sold thousands of lock for a span of 10+ years, we already know which model and which type is good and reliable. So not only the technical aspect, but knowledge of the product, brands, and models are extensive. A newbie usually only sell you their own product and might badmouth other people’s brand/ product

    4. Warranty:

    – This of course is very straight forward, if a factory/ seller dare to give long warranty, then he must be confident in his own product.

    5. Your homework: Feedback

    – Combine all 4 factor above, do your homework and research. Also ask around and read testimonial/ ratings from other customer, then you will know.

If you do all 5 properly, you will undoubtedly got a reliable and long lasting door lock

  • Can you put a smart door lock on security door or metal door?

Can you put a smart door lock on security door or metal door?

On a security door, the main, one single consideration that we should consider, is the inter-connecting Triple/ Quad Locking System. When the lock is locked, besides the main locking is engaged, there are 2 more bolts (on top, and on bottom of the door) that will be engaged together. That’s what makes a security door lock so strong and so secured. It’s the same concept as the bank’s vault door, just not up to that sort of level. So when you choose a smart door lock for security door, keep this in mind

Diagram illustrating locks on a security door
Diagram illustrating locks on a security door

The trick in choosing a smart door lock or digital door lock for security door is to make sure after installing, those inter-connecting bolts still functions together with the smart door lock. Only models that are designed for such functions can be used.

Some of the brands that did produced smart door lock for security door includes:

    • Philips (603e)
    • Kaadas (multiple models)
    • Samsung (H50)
    • Lockin Lever Handle Version
    • Aqara Lever Handle version
    • Xiaomi
    • Abrain
    • Finetec

Now, come to our picks and choice for you. It will be out of your expectation. Instead of voting for the branded, we opt for Finetec RX-7. This model is THE ONLY ONE that has intelligent locking. Means it will lock only when you close the door. Whereas all other models are all time-based. So even if you did not close the door, but after the time passes, the bolt will all automatic come out.

It might seems to be important right now, but as you use it everyday, and especially here in Malaysia we love to keep our door open to masuk angin, you will realise that this intelligent locking is an important feature. Without it we will feel frustrated with smart lock one day.

But end of the day, this article is just an opinion and to educate. You make the final call.

However, you have to understand that this is no easy task. It’s not like someone just buy a device and then plug and play and hacking done. It takes high level programming skills to do this. Some ordinary thief or burglar will definitely unable to do such thing.

Assuming you are someone very important that, some thief with very extremely high level of programming skills and experience, at least a Degree Holder from Harvard maybe, and have been working with CIA or NSA or FBI (or the equivalent agency in Malaysia if such agency exist) might be interested to hack into your smart door lock.

  • What is a Smart Door Lock System? Detailed explanation.

What is a Smart Door Lock System? Detailed explanation.

You’ve surely seen a smart door lock in Kuching by now (at least in catalog or advertisement?). It has become very very common. In this post we will explain the full available features of Smart Door Lock in common

    Automatic Locking [MUST HAVE!]

    • This is a must-have for any smart door lock in Kuching. You just close the door. And it’s locked for you automatically.
There are 2 type of auto-locking method
      • By timer: Set a timer (such as 5 seconds). After each unlocking, it will auto lock itself after 5 seconds (even if your door is not closed)
      • By sensor: This is the best. The “smarter” smart door lock. The lock knows when your door is closed, then only it will perform “locking”. If you keep the door open, it won’t lock itself.

6 Ways To Unlock Smart Door Lock

    1. Fingerprint
      1. This is the most common, and also the fastest. Really don’t have to carry anything. Just your fingerprint to unlock the lock
      2. Some people who might not have a clear fingerprint will have problem with this method.
      3. For kids, usually need to be 4 years and above for accurate recognition
    2. Pincode
      • Same way as ATM, press a pincode usually 6 digit and door open.
      • Also very convenient and essential method of unlocking. No.1 must have for any smart door lock.
      • Still works no matter what happen to other method (finger cut, forget to bring access card, etc)
      • You can even share passcode to any visitor that need to enter. Can be changed anytime
    3. Scan-card
      • You’ve used this function before. Where? Hotel. Usually 3 star above hotel will have a scan card lock. That’s how you enter with this function.
      • Suitable for the elderly, they usually disliked passcode or fingerprint. They prefer use card to unlock. If they lost the card, can just delete the card memory from the lock. Re-issue a new card from the lock.
      • Also for your visiting guest. Throw them a card and they return to you when they are leaving
    4. Face Recognition
      • This is the latest. Face-scanning technology. Works the same way as iPhone or Samsung face unlocking the phone.
      • Can’t work properly if you are wearing mask. Need to unmask
      • This is still very new by this time of writting, so unlocking speed is slower, and got a few software bugs. Might takes some time for this feature to stabilise and improve.
      • Will be more convenient than fingerprint recognition. You basically don’t have to touch the smart door lock
    5. Video Camera
      1. This is not really an unlocking method, but more like a special function extension
      2. At any time you want, you can activate and check CCTV from phone
      3. There is a doorbell build-in to this type of lock. If people press bell button, your phone will have instant notification and you can check who is at the door
      4. Is like you have another extra CCTV right in front of the door. Is definitely useful
    6. Bluetooth/ Wifi
      1. You can use phone app to unlock the door directly.
      2. Can also check records. Who entered, and what time they enter.

    Backup Keys

    • For smart door lock located at main door, a backup key is absolutely essential.
    • With electronics, anything can have the possibility of going wrong. Even multi-million Boeing aircraft can be crashed due to electronic mulfunction. So you must have backup key standing by in case of emergency
    • At least one of the backup key must be placed outside the house. Like your office or a trusted relative house.

    Types of Smart Door Lock

    • Handle type (main locking)
      • Your whole door need only this one lock. Is a full size smart door lock. With lever handle or push pull handle

Handle type Smart door lock kuching
    Handle Type Smart Door Lock

      • You must first have a handle (lever handle, or pull handle bar)

    add-on smart door lock kuching
    Non-handle type (add-on)

Standalone, or link to smart home application?

    1. Standalone means the smart door lock works fully on its own. It cannot be linked to any other devices. The door lock is working on it’s own, minding its own business. Example will be Samsung, Yale, Philips, Schlage. These are all standalone. Some do have door lock apps, but the apps only for the lock. Standalone apps
    2. Smart home linked: This is the upcoming trend. The door lock is part of a smart home system. They are related to the switch, the socket, the sensor. They can be commanded to control other device (when door unlocked, switch on light) or can be commanded by other device (when I turn OPEN autogate, unlock the smart door lock)
