Digital Door Lock: Will it make your life more complicated?

You’re looking to get a digital door lock. What’s the purpose?

We’re not 100% sure about you, but majority of our client look forward to manage their time better, and for convenience. The time wasted to look for keys, or making a return trip just to check if you forgot to lock your main door, are a simple waste of time.

But we give you caution here: if you get a digital lock with low quality, it will give you more headache than convenience. You will have to waste even more time to service it, get locked out, waiting for locksmith to come, etc etc etc.

Among the factors to look at are: material (more plastic or metal?), experience (new manufacturer or experienced), electronic part (processing speed, mobo quality) and locking mechanism.

So before deciding on digital lock, get a neutral and experienced advice. And don’t put your trust in brand name alone. Digital lock is still a new technology for every company. So even good brand are still testing it and might run into a lot of problems.

  • Just a strong padlock is not enough.

Just a strong padlock is not enough.

Yes we do need a good padlock. But that’s just half the battle.

Padlock hasp (so called padlock-eye or padlock-ear) also needs to be strong. In this case it gets cut-off. But also in many cases it just get ripped of from the welded part.

There are best way to have a really strong hasp is:

    • Get a non-welded hasp. Available in many locksmith store, either clamped type or rivetted type. This will prevent rip-off attack. Also must be made of hardened steel. If just made of mild steel, it still can prevent rip-off attack, but can’t prevent the cut attack. Hardened steel cannot be easily cut or saw-ed.

  • Cheap Lock. Why is it so cheap?

Cheap Lock. Why is it so cheap?

The cheapest lock that we’ve seen is made of zinc diecast with plastic core. Actually we’re also surprised that plastic can be used to make the core (key cylinder). Zinc diecast are usually simple manufacturing process and uses recycle zinc as it’s main raw material. That’s why it’s cheap

And this photo, is a zinc diecast lock. Almost 2 years old. Broken handle, from just ordinary residential use. Owner apparently was not aware, as his contractor choose and install for him.

Never trust a cheap lock guys.

  • Digital Door Lock Is Taking Over Traditional Key-ed Lock – Trends in Kuching

Digital Door Lock Is Taking Over Traditional Key-ed Lock – Trends in Kuching

Digital Door Lock installed in Kuching, Kaadas K7 German company

You look for ordinary lock (mechanical type)in Kuching? We have it. Pretty wide range.
You look for digital door lock in Kuching? We have it. Also pretty wide range.

So if you want to know which one of these 2 types are people buying right now, we know the trend.

Few years before this, we can say, if we take out those ordinary lock from our business, we will get out of business very soon. But now? We can comfortably stop selling ordinary locks, and still survive.

We know the trends by numbers. Key-ed lock sales-down, digital lock sales-up. Pure proof, no estimation. People are going digital nowadays. Perhaps influenced by the evolution of phone. Just like phones are going more “digital”, door lock too.

    Phone:

Before: Bring phone and camera and laptop.
    Now: Bring ONE smartphone

    Lock:

Before: Bring bunch of keys & your conscious mind (as you CANNOT forget/ misplace the key, if not you’ll be in trouble)
    Now: Bring nothing. Just fingers.

One things that you should learn from today’s post, is this:

The key-type of lock at your front door – is going to be obsolete very soon – will be called old-fashion, embarrasing, NOKIA, out-dated, poor.

IS DIGITAL LOCK BETTER THAN MECHANICAL LOCK? The answer is irrelevant.

Is smartphone really better than NOKIA phone? Look at people around you. We’re becoming like zombie. Not talking to each other. Looking at phones even when family dinner together. Actually the world might even be better and happier without this invention, don’t you agree? But it’s of no use to debate. Trends that are coming will come, and unstoppable. And we, somehow will just follow it.

  • Really Cool Digital Doorlock installed @ Kuching (and how to see a lock is durable or not)

Really Cool Digital Doorlock installed @ Kuching (and how to see a lock is durable or not)

Installed a really cool digital door lock (deadbolt type) today, main reason is because the machine speaks English! It’s nothing very new, but just not much digital lock actually speaks English.

See video of the lock in action here: https://youtu.be/w3wCY9Yt5Xo

Quality wise, we think this is the best quality lock from all the Samsung digital lock range. Not the highest priced but highest quality. Also tested with ANSI American standard and achieved grade 2, which is pretty high. Another brand that we have, Yale, not a single digital lock from Yale achieved ANSI grade 2.

ANSI grade signifies the durability and also resistance against attack. Durability wise is easy to understand, Grade 1 = 800,000 usage cycle, Grade 2 = 400,000 cycle and Grade 3 = 200,000 cycle. If no grade, that mean the lock will not endure till 200,000 – failed the test.

So next time, you know how to see a good lock. By its ANSI Grade.

  • Digital Lock and Grille

    Digital Lock and Grille

Can a digital lock be installed on grille door? Yes of course. But there are some aspect to consider.

One of the problem is on majority grille, the gap ia big enough for a hand to go in, hence the hand can just press a button on inside of the lock and voila, the digital lock is unlocked. That’s how digital lock functions. Auto lock when door close, and to unlock from inside simply press a button.

Knowing this one of tha way is to make the grille (if you not yet make or buy) in a design that the gap will not allow hand to go through. Just like in this photo above.

Another way is there are actually models that are specific for grille. From inside, there is no button to press to unlock. You have to use remote control (usually will stick on inside wall beside your wooden door), and can also use key to unlock from inside. Yes need key or remote, so even if a hand can go through grille, no way to unlock. From outside can use passcode or cards or fingerprint. There are St Guchi or Yale if you look for such a locks.

  • Digital Lock for Homestay Business Owner

Digital Lock for Homestay Business Owner

Homestay owner wants to control the access to their property when they are not there. With this digital lock for homestay or airbnb owner, they can issue passcode remotely using phone apps, and then just SMS to their client. The best part is that the passcode has certain validity.

For example, a one-time passcode, for a contractor who will just come one time to fix something. After using the passcode for one time, the lock will automatically won’t recognise the passcode anymore.

And for short stay client, say 2 days, use the phone apps to issue a 2-days validity passcode. That passcode can be used for 2 days only, after that the lock will not recognise the passcode anymore.

With this lock, you can manage your homestay business even without always being there.

We all heard of the Stoneman Douglas High School Shooting in the US just early this month, 2 months ago. Half an earth away, yet we were shocked, and we sympathise with the victims’ family.

Shortly after in our locksmith forum, some common people ask and talked about bullet proof door and lock. Almost all locksmiths agree, that was not practical due to the cost and functions.

In fact, a good door lock had already saved many lives in this incident:
    http://www.ntd.tv/2018/02/16/heroic-florida-teacher-protected-students-from-shooter-by-locking-door-covering-windows/

There was this one teacher, Shanthi Viswanathan, who took fast action and locked the classroom door immediately after hearing a fire alarm that doesn’t sounds right (other teacher escorted their students out). As the result of this heroic teacher, she saved herself and her whole class.

A wise teacher. A good door. A good door lock. These are the things that saved the students in that class.

To prevent such thing from happening to our family, we too need these. A wise action, a good door, and a good door lock.

  • Padlock Knowledge – Just Buy A Cheap Padlock

Padlock Knowledge – Just Buy A Cheap Padlock

    Padlock Pried Open

We have numerous cases of like this photo. Cheap padlock just get pried open. No cutting, no sawing, no hard-hitting. Just the key hole get pried out. And the padlock opens.

Numerous cases. Seems like this way of break-in is pretty common here. How did they do it? Just a screwdriver that you probably put outside your house compound. Yes, that’s what needed, at all. One screwdriver. (or maybe something flat)

Will this post gave some tips to potential thief on how to open this padlock? It won’t. Here’s why:

    • the only person who don’t know how to pry this padlock, is, well, YOU.

That’s why you buy this cheap padlock, isn’t it? You think it’s OK. You don’t meed a good padlock.

You buy it, and thief pry it in 10seconds, get into your house. What happens next? 2 possibilities:

    1. Thief breaks in, and get away with your valuables
    2. Thief breaks in, your wife and children saw their face, and what will the thief do?

If (1) happens, that’s a good news, that your family are safe. We don’t care about your money. You can earn it back.
But if (2) happens, what can you do? We’re not trying to scare you out. But that the world that we’re living in. Thieves became murderers. Humans, became inhuman.

Come on guys, don’t be a cheapskate when buying locks. Find a good one. The one that can really protects, that will make a thief give up trying. A vast majority of our client, we realised, bought an expansive toilet bowl, but trying to save on door locks.

If you want to save money, save it from your toilet bowl, your kitchen cabinet. No point getting a comfortable toilet bowl to sit on, when you can’t even protect your home.

Go buy a cheap padlock, if you have no family, and your life is cheap. You don’t need a good one.

  • Door Magnet/ Door Stopper – Don’t install it like this

Door Magnet/ Door Stopper – Don’t install it like this

    Magnetic Door stopper

What is a Door Stopper or Holder?

Door Stopper is a necessity on each door. Without it your door lock will hit against your wall (or tiles), and as the result either your wall will be dented or your tiles will crack.

At some windy area, door stopper might not be enough. You will need magnetic stopper that will hold the door. So if strong wind blows, the door will not BANG itself close.

    Client’s Complaint

One of the most common type is so-called tower stopper. Available in both magnetic(stop-and-hold function) or non-magnetic (stop function). Like our client above, who bought from us to be installed by his contractor. After few weeks, he called us and complaint to us. Complains that his toes always kicked the stopper.

That is very painful by the way. We have to explain to him that the stopper is wrongly installed.

Tower type stopper is called by another name, which is Overhead Stopper. It’s meant to be installed above over the head. We always install it at the upper-end corner of the door. One of the reason is the kicking. So we end up helping the client to move up the magnetic stopper to the top of the door to his satisfaction.

    Other Types of Door Stopper

There are many variation of stoppers. If tower doesn’t fit your door due to some reason (example: no wall at the back), there are still many other options to consider. One of the famous one is the Flat-floor magnet stopper.

    floor magnet stopper

One part install to the door leaf, but another part which is flat, installed to the floor. Because it’s flat, you won’t kick it. You might step on it and able to feel it’s existence but it doesn’t hurt you. Make sure to get a fully SUS304 stainless steel, as floor is subject to wet-mopping so some cheaper version made of zinc or SUS201 wil rust eventually.
